20 imagesI sit here, in isolation, contemplating my mortality at a time when there is a pandemic. This work lives in a box in the attic, where a young boy wanders in and discovers it. He opens the box and sees a world he hasn't experienced. He imagines the person who made these photos, and wonders if, he too, can open that door of his own open road some day. The baby will grow up in a rural area where one looks at the world differently from a big city. It is an uncertain time. The project is a scrapbook of a life lived in black and white. This portfolio is intended to explore the real, recreated and imagined connection I have through landscape, objects, animals and years spent on the road. They are aimed at discovery, while offering the freedom to question and explore. The photographs examine scale, and the small role we play in our respective environment; light, and where it can inspire introspection; texture, and how touch can induce wonder. Using black and white gives a sense of time to the work. My imagined interpretation pays homage to where I’ve been and where I am today. The photographs, therefore, are a circle, and somewhat of a bio. Some are old, some are recent, and all have been reprocessed, made B & W, scratched and reworked. The experiences and the perception of how I have been shaped, is a tale of what made me an artist, more interested in moving around, being female, facing risk, and how the contemporary world is more focused on anxiety, and the limitations we face in society today.

19 imagesPainted Landscapes was created to explore nature as a metaphor for being engulfed in color and texture. The style references my background in painting, where layers and motion are intended to mirror brushstrokes. Observing this relationship, and processing the images in a particular way is intended to reveal a more conceptual vision of landscape and sense of place. The work is printed on paper, brushed aluminum and crepe de chine in numerous sizes..

41 images2009-2012 In 2009 I collaborated with the photographer Mary Carothers to travel from St Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, CA and photograph the original Pony Express route. This project explored the route of the Pony Express, which was in existence from 1861-1863 before declaring bankruptcy. With a mix of theme parks and desolate landscapes along the Oregon and Mormon trails, some of the original roads are unchanged today. The myths and legends surrounding the Pony Express, which richly came to life in Hollywood westerns, shaped the story of the American West and how we view America today. The publication, Pony Express- The Remix,( ©2009, 40 pgs) from the exhibition, is also available for purchase.

26 imagesThis project is a collaboration with video by Nancy Davidson that explores women with power, freedom and grace in the context of the game. The goal is to celebrate the camaraderie of the sport, the dynamic energy radiating from its motions and rhythms, and the individuality of the women. The players skate in a circle, jostling and pushing each other. The aggression and interaction of the roller derby teammates communicate this force through group culture and action. They are designers, artists, nurses, and professionals in their daily lives. They are a new generation of women pursuing strength in a different way. We see the skater’s athleticism as an expression of empowerment. "I am Not Tame" explores the lyricism of the continuous sounds and motions of skaters encircling the blue track. The challenge for us was how to manifest, represent and open a cultural space women to breathe, reach, grasp, push, seize, clench, lunge, rush, jab and thrust. The work also includes lenticular images. Prints are 20" x 30". *quote by Jeanette Winterson from the Daylight Gate.

26 images1993-2000 The Female Bodybuilders series was inspired by women who reshape and chisel their bodies into larger than life sculptures. Portraits were originally created for the exhibition, "Picturing The Modern Amazon" at the New Museum, and the publication under the same name by New Museum Books Spring, and Rizzoli 2000). The women were invited to create a performance based on someone they admired. Each had a story to tell, and their reasons for becoming a bodybuilder. They had their own fan base, such as people like R. Crumb, who came to the opening riding one of the women. The film, "Picturing The Modern Amazon", was subsequently made of the women, which includes the photographs presented here. All prints are available for purchase. Please contact the artist directly for acquisition of vintage or archival ink jet prints. Originals were printed 16" x 20" to 30" x 40".

21 images2001-2003 The Angels project is an exploration of icons and myths. The photographs were created in the studio as collaborations between the photographer and the model. In much of the world, angels are spiritual beings, who are considered messengers of God. They teach, command and inform. Angels are revered, and often take human form. From the fallen angel, the angel of death, and the angel of mercy, models took the persona of one who could fly. The images examine the idea of playing a character in mythology, and look at metaphors in our culture, which run the gamut from greeting cards, to Victoria’s Secret models wearing wings. The portfolio is an interpretation of one group of supernatural beings. All images are available for purchase. Please contact the artist directly to discuss acquisition of vintage or archival ink jet prints.

29 images1996-1998 I embarked on the Remembrance series as a path to create a personal record that incorporated both fact and fiction. The photographs were created from work that existed in family albums scrapbooks, and objects saved over the years. From Chinese fingernails, to a taxidermy raven, I saved these objects as talismans and keepsakes of places I’d been, events I experienced, and family. The work focused on my childhood, my parents, my home, travel, and the birth of my daughter. The images have previously been exhibited in a grid, pairing 2-6 images together with objects, and images referencing personal milestones.

29 images1993-1998 In 1994, I was commissioned by the NYC Mayor's office to document children interacting in playgrounds and elementary schools. Often considered a taboo subject because of its perceived sentimentality, children in fact, create a window reflecting the " American Dream", and how that dream has evolved. Bright kids, children with bi-polar and attention deficit disorders, the class kleptomaniac; these children are the new normal. Their actions and expressions simulate adults. While observing these children, the art of imitation opened my eyes to photographing people in a different way. I learned to look past the adult, and see a more in-depth view of individuals and mimics.

31 images2009-present This series of landscapes reflects my examination of abstract patterns. It is a dissection of shapes, an elimination of the horizon line, and a push into a more layered surface. The photographs are a study of atmosphere and seasons in nature. Utilizing fog, rain and snow to build layers, the images examine how shapes change when looking through, and beyond the elements. The complete portfolio is comprised of 60 images from the Catskill Mountains, Poconos, with additional photographs of the Midwest, Southwest, and Hawaii.

35 images1973-1989 As a child growing up in a small community, my travels were inspired by the literature of Lawrence Durrell, Bruce Chatwin, Paul Theroux , Freya Stark, Alexandra David Neel, Gertrude Bell and many others, including family members and their scrapbooks from working as miners at the turn of the 1900s. The photographs featured within the archive were produced over a twenty-year period of traveling in Indonesia, India, Singapore, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala, Morocco, Australia, Thailand and Egypt. From an early age, landscape and history played an important role in my work. The images are not intended to document, but to explore environments as a of form of meditation on where we live and the role we play in the experience of magical thinking.

40 imagesLight and motion are the main characters in this work. It is an extension of the Catskills and the American Landscape series and Other Cultures. Less of a narration, the work is more of a walk-about with fresh eyes on the space around the animals. BOTSWANA 2023. Mashatu Game Reserve. (Photos 1 through 16) ITALY 2022.
