Female Bodybuilders: Picturing the Modern Amazon
26 images Created 1 Jul 2010
1993-2000
The Female Bodybuilders series was inspired by women who reshape and chisel their bodies into larger than life sculptures.
Portraits were originally created for the exhibition, "Picturing The Modern Amazon" at the New Museum, and the publication under the same name by New Museum Books Spring, and Rizzoli 2000).
The women were invited to create a performance based on someone they admired. Each had a story to tell, and their reasons for becoming a bodybuilder. They had their own fan base, such as people like R. Crumb, who came to the opening riding one of the women.
The film, "Picturing The Modern Amazon", was subsequently made of the women, which includes the photographs presented here.
All prints are available for purchase. Please contact the artist directly for acquisition of vintage or archival ink jet prints. Originals were printed 16" x 20" to 30" x 40".
