This project is a collaboration with video by Nancy Davidson that explores women with power, freedom and grace in the context of the game. The goal is to celebrate the camaraderie of the sport, the dynamic energy radiating from its motions and rhythms, and the individuality of the women. The players skate in a circle, jostling and pushing each other. The aggression and interaction of the roller derby teammates communicate this force through group culture and action.
They are designers, artists, nurses, and professionals in their daily lives. They are a new generation of women pursuing strength in a different way. We see the skater’s athleticism as an expression of empowerment.
"I am Not Tame" explores the lyricism of the continuous sounds and motions of skaters encircling the blue track. The challenge for us was how to manifest, represent and open a cultural space women to breathe, reach, grasp, push, seize, clench, lunge, rush, jab and thrust.
The work also includes lenticular images. Prints are 20" x 30".
