In 2009 I collaborated with the photographer Mary Carothers to travel from St Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, CA and photograph the original Pony Express route.
This project explored the route of the Pony Express, which was in existence from 1861-1863 before declaring bankruptcy. With a mix of theme parks and desolate landscapes along the Oregon and Mormon trails, some of the original roads are unchanged today.
The myths and legends surrounding the Pony Express, which richly came to life in Hollywood westerns, shaped the story of the American West and how we view America today.
